"China Customs has released its wine import statistics for 2012. While the figures aren’t perfect, they do provide a snapshot of what’s happening in the Middle Kingdom. Jim Boyce got out his calculator to figure out what’s hot and what’s not."

“Grapes of good hope”, Lu Chang
"Is it tough to sell South African wines? Yes," says Jim Boyce, a well-known wine writer, who runs the website called Grape Wall of China. "Most people know little about them. They don't have easy access to them in some cities, and instead tend to buy from brands and countries they know. "But the situation is changing because there are distributors expanding throughout the country with South African wines in their portfolios, and there is a growing niche of consumers interested in trying new wines." Evidence that Chinese drinkers are developing a taste for South African wine can be seen in the results of a contest organized by Jim Boyce, founder of the wine website Grape Wall of China. For the contest, a dozen Chinese customers sampled 40 wines priced below 100 yuan and ranked them on different aspects. In each of the four years that the contest has been held, South African wines have been in the top three slots. "This is a small sample and the wine is inexpensive, but it is still a good sign for South African wines," Boyce says.

"This contest is different because it is the only wine tasting in which judges are casual consumers, specifically those who enjoy and occasionally drink wine instead of wine experts," Boyce said as he introduced the contest."

"The coordinator of the competition, Jim Boyce, prefaced the tasting by advising the judges that we were looking for wines that were at least of commercial quality. This is because in many previous Chinese competitions, a large majority of the wines had faults and/or were thin and green tasting. In Ningxia, however, we only found 7 to 8 wines that were faulty, and this was mainly due to oxidation issues."

“Chinese producers see red over cheap European wine”, Terril Yue Jones
"Inexpensive wine imports to China are growing rapidly, says Jim Boyce, a Beijing-based wine writer who runs the blog Grapewallofchina.com. Wine from Spain made up some 5 percent of the Chinese bulk wine market in 2009, but that share has soared to 50 percent of the market now, he said. ""If you look at the first quarter of 2012, Spanish wines were 9.2 percent of the Chinese market by volume, but 5.1 percent of the market by value," Boyce said. "Whether that's dumping I don't know, but a lot of people are probably looking at that and thinking so.""

“Jim Boyce unravels the intriguing Chinese grapevine”, Mike Peters
"While the quality-wine market has been curbed by expectations ("Is it French? Is it Bordeaux?") and limited production, that's changing now that Chinese wines like Helan's Jia Bei Lan are starting to win international recognition. "But it's still going to be awhile before city folks in China can shop for many of these wines, Boyce says, especially those produced in the western provinces."
