The Grape Wall of China Challenge: A Call for Wine

The Grape Wall of China Wine Challenge

March 13, Maxim’s of Paris, Beijing

~

The Grape Wall of China Challenge will be held at Maxim’s of Paris (Solana) in Beijing on March 13. The GWOC Challenge aims to find wines that are both modestly priced and good. The panel of judges will include both wine professionals and consumers. And at least 75 percent of the judges will be Chinese citizens. For more details, see the initial announcement in Chinese, English, or French.

Distributors are invited to submit a maximum of four wines:

  • There is a maximum of two red wines and two white wines.
  • Each wine must retail in China for less than RMB100.
  • Each wine must be made from a different grape.
  • Only two wines may originate from a single nation. If three wines are submitted, at least two nations must be represented. If four wines are submitted, at least three nations must be represented.

We created this system for two reasons: 1) to encourage a wider range of grape varieties and nations of origin for the contest; and 2) to be fair both to distributors who import from a single nation and those who do so from multiple nations. This chart (hopefully) helps explain the requirements:

Wines Red wines White wines Nation(s) of origin
1 0 or 1 0 or 1 1
2 1 1 1 or 2
3 1 or 2 1 or 2 2 or 3
4 2 2 3 or 4

The GWOC Challenge is designed for 60 wines. Distributor participation is on a first-confirmed, first-served basis. Interested distributors should confirm their participation by sending an email to beijingboyce@yahoo.com and indicating how many wines they plan to submit (maximum of four). Other details, including delivery of the wine  will then be provided.

Notes:

  • The deadline for delivering wines to the GWOC Challenge is February 27 by 5 PM.
  • Distributors should submit two bottles of each wine.
  • A list of participating distributors, including Web site link, will be included at the top right of the Grape Wall of China blog.
  • Results of the GWOC Challenge will be published on this blog within 24 hours of the contest closing.
